Ten Things You Must Know About Flash

There are certain calculations that you should do before taking photos using a flash.

  • You must consider the brightness of your flash. The intensity of light will decrease along with the distance from the source. The distance of the object from the flash should be considered before taking the photo.
  • Always remember that your flash is also a light. You will get better lighting depending on the intensity of the light. Identify the strength or intensity of your flash before using it. You will have to position yourself depending on the amount of lighting you require because you cannot control the intensity of a flash.
  • The element of light from direct sunlight has to be considered while using a camera flash. Sun shine offers a natural light. You have to consider the amount of sun light falling on the subject. If flash is not used properly your photo will be exposed to over light. The exposure depends on your distance from the subject.
  • You have to consider the lighting available in the background while using a flash. If you want to include the details of the background in your photos, the lighting in the background must be also correct. In a darker room you may have use additional lightings to capture the background.
  • The power of your camera flash and its distance capability can be studied from the guide number. Guide number is a specification provided by your flash vendor. Guide number is constant value that is equal to the aperture number. Guide number can also be calculated by multiplying aperture by distance.
  • You will have to take photographs in various situations. While taking photographs you have to respect the privacy of other people. People may not like using flashes in some situations. People at work may be disturbed due to the usage of flashes.
  • You have to turn off your flash whenever it is applicable. If you are not turning off the flash you will be loosing battery power. You may accidentally use the flash in unwanted situation. Taking pictures in places like zoo using flash light is distractive.
  • Camera flash should be considered only as a secondary light source. In most situations you will be able to use existing natural light. You must try to utilize this light as it is the natural lighting of a scene. You should use your flash only as a supplement and in cases light is insufficient.
  • High intensity of light from the flash will often blow out your photos. Simplest way to decrease this is to increase the distance to the source. Get closer to the subject until your frame if full. Then take a step back and refocus to reduce the intensity of flash. Stepping one step back will not change your frame.
  • You can reduce the intensity of flash light by redirecting it to other surfaces. You can place some reflective material in the front of the flash light to redirect it.
